I am an artist working in several disciplines, primarily painting, printmaking and drawing. Subject matter is paramount to me and its content may direct or dictate which medium will best suit my expression. My knowledge of art history ignites the drive to research all ideas, think about them for a period of time, visualizing, before approaching the work of art.

All artists try to bring the light and illumination from a scene before them to the paper or canvas they are working on. To bring that light to your work is the supreme effort and accomplishment. The following works of art, consisting of monoprints, etchings, drawings and mixed medium, affirm my interests in illumination as it applies to the heavenly bodies, man made pyrotechnic displays and unusual cosmic events.

This body of work represents some of the visual beauty experienced while visiting major cities around the world. I have been interested in fireworks displays and the excitement of the colors and spectacles taking place at these many festivals. The sheer delight at these illuminations in the black sky, and these wonderful explosions of colors provide endless wonder for me.

I treat the canvas similar to a printing plate. Deeply incised crevices and scratches are seen in the surfaces. This technique is a contemporary approach to the technique applied by master painters in the 15th Century. By retaining the imprimatur (the psychology of the dark background) with under-painting and several layers of glazing. The images emerge from the dark to full color and light.

My technique incorporates more than one printmaking process, which allows a powerful veiling effect to occur. This approach offers the viewer a feeling of peacefulness and deception at the same time.

I usually produce my art in a series or as a contained body of work. This way I can explore the shapes and colors by changing the composition again and again, remaining true to the subject. There are moments of spontaneity within the plan.
