The Martians of My Youth
I am an artist working in several disciplines, primarily painting, printmaking and drawing. Subject matter is paramount to me and its content may direct or dictate which medium will best suit my expression. My knowledge of art history ignites the drive to research all ideas, think about them for a period of time, visualizing, before approaching the work of art.
In the following works on paper consisting of Collage with Encaustics and Resins, I am traveling back in my imagination to the time when questions of other civilizations plagued my mind-and dreams of other worldly beings brought fear to my inner spirit.
My technique is about drawing with paper. In other words, using the paper as the line. At times these works invoke humor and fear simultaneously, which is the way I felt as a child when watching monster movies and reading comic books filled with superheroes. The idea to run screaming from the room still consumes me. The encaustics and resins bring a powerful veiling effect, along with a feeling of deception to the spectator.
I usually produce my art in a series or as a contained body of work. This way I can explore the shapes and colors by changing the composition again and again, remaining true to the subject. There are moments of spontaneity within the plan. |
